Baby Shower

We had our Baby Shower on Sunday, which was nothing short of perfect! Greg and I decided to do a BBQ and pool party, rather than a girls-only affair. We wanted a laid-back vibe and for everyone to just have fun! Enter: the backyard BaByQ!

Our good friends, The Tuckers, offered to throw the BaByQ at their house and it turned out amazing!  My parents and Britt & Zach went above and beyond to make it a special day. They made tons of appetizers and slow-cooked barbecue pulled pork with all the sides: my mom's infamous mac 'n cheese and broccoli salad, along with a few staples - fried chicken and baked beans. The desserts were from a local bakery and featured carrot cake and vanilla cupcakes, mini chocolate cupcakes & cake-pops. 

Greg and I were blown away by our 40 friends and family members that came to the party! We have the most amazing support system, near and far, that helped us prepare and celebrate Baby Jack. We can't thank everyone enough for their love and generosity! 10 weeks to go!

Second Trimester Recap

The second trimester is often referred to as the "honeymoon" of pregnancy and I have to agree for the most part. Between finding out we have a baby boy on the way, feeling flutters and kicks, having more energy, less nausea, my skin clearing up a bit (the first trimester hormones did a number on my acne-prone skin!) and my baby bump starting to show, it's been a great three months!

I previously shared all about our gender reveal, but it was definitely a highlight of the second trimester and a day I'll never forget! Greg and I are so excited for our little guy's arrival and love being able to refer to him by name. My bump started to show between 20 and 21 weeks. It was like as soon as we knew it was a boy and started calling him Jack, he really made his presence known.

As for my style, I've gotten away with not buying maternity clothes so far. I retired my jeans (it's too damn hot to wear them anyways!) and I've been living in dresses and rompers. Between maxis and stretchy bodycon styles, I've been really comfortable and can dress my bump with closet favorites and a few new pieces that I can wear after pregnancy as well.

After a long Sunday morning walk on the beach, I was doing my makeup and felt the first flutters at 15 weeks and 5 days, which felt like a little tapping from the inside. Movements and kicks (the best feeling in the world!) started getting stronger and more regular by 22 weeks. On August 1st, right at 23 weeks, Greg felt the first kick on the outside! Jack tends to get active in the evenings and we were laying on the couch watching Netflix when I felt some movement so I held Greg's hand on my belly and within 2 minutes he felt a little thump against his palm. Now every night after dinner, we both like to feel him having a dance party in there, and he's getting so strong that we can see his kicks!

I've definitely had more energy the last few months and have been able to get back into my workout routine. A typical week for me consists of weight lifting 3 times per week with arm and leg exercises (no more abs or moves that required me to lay flat on my back), yoga & stretching, and a ton of walking - incline walking on the treadmill before work 2 days per week, 15 minutes around the block on my lunch break, and 30-60 minutes on the beach after work with Greg, which is our most treasured time together.

Pre-pregnancy I was following a modified paleo diet (loosely put: no dairy, no carbs, no sweets, no alcohol) and the 80/20 rule to allow myself a few treats without the guilt (I love pizza, sushi & cookies!) Since becoming pregnant, I have stopped doing paleo and have eaten what I please, while still focusing on nutrient-rich foods to help develop my growing babe, and drinking as much water as possible. I eat about every 3 hours to keep the nausea at bay. I have been trying my best to stay healthy the majority of the time, eating mostly protein, fruits and veggies, but don't beat myself up if I occasionally want Chick-fil-a or a little dessert here and there. It's all about balance! 

Most days I start with a protein shake (a banana, strawberries or spinach, peanut butter, almond milk, vanilla protein powder & ice), for a mid-morning snack I eat Greek yogurt with a dozen almonds mixed in, lunch is usually a salad with chicken, my afternoon snack is either a Halo orange or Kind bar, and dinner is generally a home-cooked meal involving a protein, veggie and grain. I haven't had much of a sweet tooth since becoming pregnant, but once in a while I'll have a little something.

After completely cutting out caffeine during my first trimester, I started drinking one cup of coffee only on the weekends starting around 16 weeks. By 24 weeks, I was craving iced coffee so I introduced it back into to my morning routine, with just half of a cup of iced coffee each day to stay under the recommended 200 milligram limit. 

Although I've been blessed with a healthy pregnancy, it hasn't all been rainbows this trimester - between daily backaches, severe pelvic and abdominal pain, and trouble sleeping (a mix of insomnia, acid reflux, getting up to pee 2-3 times a night, and not being able to get comfortable without sleeping on my stomach or back). I also experienced my first Braxton Hicks contractions at 23.5 weeks. I'm trying to embrace every little change and kick in the ribs, and enjoy this journey to the fullest. I can't believe we are mere months away from meeting our little Jack!

The older I get, the faster the years seem to go by, and this year in particular has moved at lightning-speed. Since becoming pregnant in March, my world has revolved around time - between counting the weeks of pregnancy, how many months until I'm due, and trying to push pause to enjoy this special time; all while relishing in the last few moments of my current realm of reality.

Lately we talk a lot about Jack - how we plan to raise him, how excited we are to learn about him and who he will become, and how we can't wait to bring him on our walks, seeing him experience the beach for the very first time. 

We are soaking up these warm summer months, as time is inching closer and closer to when it won't just be the two of us anymore. Change is on the horizon, which is both thrilling and slightly terrifying. While we anxiously countdown to our little guy's arrival, I'm trying my best to live in the moment, and remind myself that the only constants in life are change and time.

Fave Drug Store Beauty Buys Vol. 5

L'Oréal Elnett Hairspray
The Florida humidity has been brutal this summer, but this hairspray keeps my waves intact all day. I love that it leaves my hair feeling soft & touchable, rather than crunchy like other extra strong hold hairsprays.

I've been slathering this lotion on twice a day (in addition to Bio-Oil) since week 9 of pregnancy. Not sure if it will be enough to keep me tiger-stripe free by 40 weeks (they say it's mostly genetics), but it's kept me moisturized so far.

Gender Reveal

On Sunday, Greg and I hosted an intimate gender reveal party at our place. It was such a special day and I'm so glad we got to share the moment with our families.

I had my 20-week ultrasound appointment on July 9th and we told the doctor that we wanted to do a gender reveal party so we did not want to find out the gender that day. We had to close our eyes for part of the scan, which was very tempting but we didn't peek, and were able to keep it a surprise by receiving a sealed envelope with the gender ultrasound photo inside. 

My dad offered to arrange our gender reveal and had the task of filling the gold balloon we had ordered with the correct color confetti and keeping it a secret for a couple of hours until we were able to pop it at the party. Of course there had to be a little drama - when my dad went to fill the balloon with helium, the manager at Publix warned him that several gender reveal balloons had popped recently because it is so hot outside. My mom drove around the parking lot trying to cool the car down but when they finally tried getting it in the car, it wouldn't fit! Rather than try to squeeze the 3-foot balloon in the car and risk it popping, my mom rushed back home to switch to my dad's truck. They finally made it to our place, with the balloon still intact, and we all had a few extra grey hairs!

Once Greg's parents, sister and brother-in law arrived, it was time for the big reveal. My nephew Aiden was rooting for a boy cousin and as soon as we popped the balloon and blue confetti floated around us, Aiden started screaming, "IT'S A BOY! IT'S A BOY! IT'S A BOY!"

Greg and I are so happy and excited for our little guy to be here in a few months! We are relieved we can finally stop calling my bump "it" or "the baby" and be able to call him by his name - JACK - after Greg’s grandfather. We love you so much already Jack, and we can’t wait to meet you!

Firecracker Cookies

4th of July is right around the corner, with many BBQs and parties happening this weekend. I always love a festive treat, and these firecracker cookies are just that - complete with red, white & blue sprinkles and white chocolate chips.

1 cup butter, softened (2 sticks)
3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 eggs
2 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 package vanilla pudding mix
1 cup sprinkles
2 cups white chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a stand mixer, combine butter and sugars until smooth. Add vanilla. Beat in eggs one at a time.
In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking soda, salt and dry pudding mix.
Slowly add flour mixture to the stand mixer, stopping halfway to scrape down the sides of the bowl.
Mix in sprinkles and white chocolate chips.
Using a 1-inch cookie scoop, place dough on a baking sheet. Bake for 9-10 minutes, until soft in the center and edges and golden brown and slightly chewy. Enjoy!

First Trimester Recap

Now that I've made it through the first trimester of pregnancy and finally announced our exciting news to more than just our family and closest friends, I can share a little more about my experience.  Today I am reflecting on the first three months, including when I found out, how we told our parents and all the symptoms in between.

I found out I was pregnant on March 26th after being five days late. I really didn't want to get my hopes up since I was anything but regular after going off the pill at the end of November, but decided it was time to find out one way or another. That morning, I took a test first thing and was absolutely shocked when the digital screen read "pregnant"!! I promptly took two more tests to be sure. Greg was already at work and I was bursting at the seams to tell him, but didn't want to tell him over the phone. Luckily I didn't have to wait all day before sharing the good news with him. He picked me up from work for a lunch date and as soon as I said the words, "I'm pregnant!" out loud I started crying! Greg was equal parts surprised and excited! It was so nice to have a mini celebration with him and keep the secret just between us for a little bit.

We told my parents a couple days later. They sold their home and closed at the end of March. Greg and I went over to their house to help pack up the last few things the night before closing. It was a very emotional and tearful goodbye to my childhood home, but that night over takeout at our place, I told them the news. They were both ecstatic! It was the perfect way to close one chapter and begin another.

Our first ultrasound appointment was on April 30th, at almost 10 weeks. Seeing the heartbeat on the monitor was a truly unforgettable experience. Greg squeezed my leg as we saw our little baby kicking its feet. We waited until Mother's Day to tell Greg's family so we could do it in person. We gave Greg's mom a card with the first ultrasound photo inside. We both expected tears but I guess she already had a hunch that I was pregnant so she wasn't nearly as surprised. It was so nice to share our news and celebrate the holiday together.

To be totally honest, as excited as I am, the first trimester was pretty rough. Luckily I didn't vomit like some women, but I had morning sickness that lasted all. day. long. I've never eaten so many Goldfish crackers in my life - it's literally the only thing that sounded appetizing when I was nauseous at all hours of the day and night. I also had frequent headaches and unbearable migraines! The exhaustion and lack of energy was crazy - I was tired all the time. I would fall asleep on the couch every night before 8pm, and sleep until my 6am alarm (with multiple bathroom trips in between!) I have never been much of a nap person, but my weekends were spent napping on and off.

Exercising has been a huge part of my lifestyle, but was really on the backburner throughout the first trimester. I had barely enough energy to take a walk or practice yoga. The few times I did muster up enough energy to lift weights, I would be out of breath so quickly and had to modify my workouts. I'm really looking forward to the second trimester, hopefully with less nausea and more stamina! I'm currently 15 weeks and finally starting to feel like myself again.

On top of not feeling well, there are a lot of things that I've had to give up, especially on the food and drink front. Raw sushi has been at the top of the list of hardest foods to avoid, and I completely cut out my daily cup of coffee! I was not a big alcohol drinker to begin with, but going to Coachella a couple weeks after I found out made the experience very interesting. (For the record, the photo of me holding a beer at the festival was totally staged with my friend's drink!)

Greg has been a huge support system for me throughout this journey so far, between offering up back rubs, coming with me to the doctor's appointments, dealing with my crazy hormones and indulging my cravings for Chick-fil-A. We could not be more excited to become parents and I can't wait to start this new chapter of our lives together! I have seen how amazing he is with our nieces and nephews and know he is going to be the BEST dad! Baby Buckman is due at the beginning of December, and I'm so excited to experience the holidays with our new bundle of joy!

Curry Cauliflower Couscous

While in California for work last month, one of our vendors ordered everyone lunch to the office from Mendocino Farms, with an assortment of sandwiches, a big salad and a side of the most delicious curry couscous with roasted cauliflower. After returning back to Florida, one of my co-workers found a copy-cat recipe of the dish we all couldn't stop raving about. I promptly made it for Greg and my parents and it was a huge hit! Easy to throw together, super flavorful and made a ton for leftovers!

1 (1-pound) box couscous (or orzo)
1 head cauliflower, florets broken into pieces
1 tablespoon curry powder
1 tablespoon turmeric
1 tablespoon ground cumin
1 tablespoon ground coriander
1 1/2 teaspoons salt, more to taste
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper, more to taste
3 tablespoons light brown sugar, more to taste
3 tablespoons oil
2 small carrots, peeled, finely diced
1 cup mayo
1/2 bunch cilantro, chopped
1/2 lime, juiced

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Cook couscous according to package instructions. Rinse in cold water, drain well, and set aside in a large bowl.
In a separate bowl, toss the cauliflower and carrots with the curry powder, turmeric, cumin, coriander, salt, cayenne, brown sugar and oil. Spread out on a foil-lined baking sheet and roast in the oven for about 10 minutes, until edges are browned but still crunchy.
Add cauliflower and carrots to the couscous and fold in the mayo, cilantro and lime juice. Taste, and adjust spices and seasoning if needed. Refrigerate, covered, until ready to serve. Enjoy!

Earlier this month, I spent a week in California for a work trip to visit a few of our surf vendors and preview the Spring 2019 collection. A couple of my co-workers and I decided to stay through the weekend to attend the Coachella Valley Music and Art Festival. I had always regretted not going to Coachella while I lived in LA, so it was the perfect opportunity to check it off my bucket list. It definitely did not disappoint!

Tiffany, Ashley and I stayed in Palm Springs at the Kimpton Rowan Hotel. We took a shuttle to the festival on Friday and Saturday and skipped Sunday since we had a red-eye flight back to Florida. The art inside the festival was so cool and different - my favorite was the wire-caged buildings that looked like an optical illusion when photographed. The people-watching was next-level, with tons of outfit inspiration. The amount of food vendors was unreal - anything you could ever want, they had. My favorites were the vegan ice cream (cookies & cream with caramel - yum!) and my first Shake Shack experience.

On Friday, we made it to festival around 5pm, just in time to catch Greta Van Fleet, Bleachers, Kygo and my all-time favorite, The Weeknd! He absolutely killed his 2-hour set, playing all of my favorite songs and his voice sounded incredible. I spent his entire show dancing and singing at the top of my lungs! His performance honestly made the entire festival worth it for me! We finally made it back to our hotel at 3am, hoping to sleep in but we were all still on east-coast time and were wide awake to do it all again by 8am!

We spent Saturday morning brunching in downtown Palm Springs and made our way to Coachella around 4pm. We spent some time taking photos, hanging out in the beer garden, then watched Borns, Post Malone and attempted to see Beyoncé. The festival started to get packed around 8pm when everyone began flooding in for Beyoncé. Initially we had a great spot to watch her performance, but as it got closer, it got so congested that my 5'2 self couldn't see anything but the back of other people's heads. Beyoncé was 30 minutes late to her 11pm set, which made the crowd really ancy. When she finally hit the stage, I tried watching a nearby fan's video on his phone since I couldn't even see the screens. After she sang "Drunk In Love" we decided to call it a night and beat the rush back to the shuttle pick up.

On Sunday we found another good brunch spot with bottomless mimosas and went to a pool party at the Ace Hotel. After a few hours lounging by the pool, we made our way back to our hotel and hung out on the rooftop before heading to the airport. It was the perfect way to end the weekend, just relaxing and soaking up the Palm Springs sun. It was an unforgettable trip, both the work half and Coachella!
